Microchip Awareness: 41% of lost cats were reported by their owners to be "Indoor only", 46 % of lost dogs had been lost at least once before. Collars and tags are helpful, and should be used, but can be lost, or removed. Pets who are microchipped are more likely to be returned to their owners. Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice, implanted under the skin (non-invasive, similar to giving a vaccine), and offers a permanent form of identification! Once the microchip is registered, it goes into a national database, and is accessable 24/7! The microchips are read by a scanner, and the information is then tracked through the database. Every pet who enteres a shelter is scanned for a microchip, in hopes of finding the pet owner. Sometimes pets are not "lost" but seperated from their owners because of a disaster. Your are more likely to recover your pet after an evacuation if your pet is microchipped! One last mention...the most important thing about a microchip: Make sure your personal information is up to date with the microchip company at all times! Imagine finding a lost pet, then checking the microchip database only to find the phone number and address are not correct. We use the ResQ chip, which includes free information updates for life!
